For the June meeting we decided to focus on famous or infamous people from Islington and Hackney

As well as Dame Ninette de Valois and Alice Owen we discovered there have been many people throughout history associated with these areas – Marie Lloyd, Mary Wollstonecraft among them

One member even bought along a very interesting book – Women From Hackney’s History.

Also featured was George Loddiges, who in the late 1700s-early 1800s had the largest hothouse in the world, just by Mare Street in Hackney.
