The Committee

The N1 WI committee meets once a month to organise the meetings that keep all the members smiling. You can contact us at hello@n1wi.co.uk with any ideas for speakers, outings, meetings, or how to make N1 WI even better!

The committee is elected every year at the Annual Meeting in April and any member can stand, even if you’ve only just joined! The president is selected from the elected committee members, and the committee chooses which roles each of them will take on.

Helena – President

Why I Joined the WI:

I joined the WI to meet a new group of women in my neighbourhood and to get involved in new hobbies and activities.

Occupation:

I’m the gallery manager for a small art dealer in Mayfair.

3 facts about me:

  • I love ballet and have taken lessons since I was 3
  • I speak fluent French
  • I can’t wink

Ximena – Secretary

Why I Joined the WI:

I joined the WI as a way to make friends, and also get involved in my local community! I’m a serial hobbyist, who loves to craft (especially knitting and crochet), as well as bake, so it really seemed like an excellent fit.

Occupation:

(hopefully to be filled soon)

Three facts about me:

  • I have lived in 4 countries to date, The United States Italy, Switzerland and the UK
  • I love to travel and learn new languages, I currently speak 6 to some degree of fluency, from A2 to completely bilingual/native.
  • I love to send and receive mail and have pen pals in several different countries.

Rosie – Treasurer

Why I joined the WI:

I remember my Granny being an enthusiastic member of the WI in Coventry for years, and she even got me involved with a painting competition they were holding when I was about 11 (I got 2nd place! Something for the CV). The WI also seemed like a great way to meet people, and I’ve always loved making and learning, so it seemed like a good idea to join.

Occupation:

I’m a software developer – being paid to be geeky all day long is delightful.

Three facts about me:

  • I’m originally from Bristol, and moved to London in 2009
  • I love arts and crafts, especially stained glass and painting, and I run the craft group
  • I look after this website and emails – any problems or suggestions, send them to rosie@n1wi.co.uk!

Sarah Blake

Why I joined the WI:

I was attracted to the WI because I wanted to meet people outside my day to day circles.

I really enjoy the variety of activities at meetings and love our social half hour where I can simply chat to other members and enjoy their company.

Occupation:

I am a Community Legacy Manager at Cancer Research UK. It’s my job to connect members of the local community with the cutting-edge science being funded by the charity and to showcase the impact that gifts left in Wills have on this vital work.

Three facts about me:

  • I lived in the mountains of Sinai for 4 months while completing research for my Masters in Ecology
  • I love murder mysteries and have watched pretty much every crime drama ever made!
  • I once served Emma Watson tiramisu

Kate Jarvis

Why I joined the WI:

A not-so-long-time ago in a neighbourhood very, very near here, I moved into my first flat in the UK. I had no local friends and the WI seemed like a great way to meet some! (Spoiler alert: it was.) Plus, I’d previously founded a company whose mission was to teach practical feminist politics to individuals and corporations. I’m all about empowering women.

Occupation:

I’m an artist and a technologist. Examples of my art can be viewed at www.katerosejarvis.com 🙂 The last time I worked for someone else, my role was V.P. of Product at an educational technology company.

Three facts about me:

  • I like making people laugh
  • I used to be a semi-professional road cyclist
  • I have a Ph.D. in Sociolinguistics, and I’m currently learning to code with HTML/CSS, JavaScript and Ruby. In other words, I’m a giant nerd. (Okay, maybe this is five facts. Sue me.)
